I love Ender's Shadow. I love Ender's Game. I love Orson Scott Card.

Ender's Shadow is good. Ender's Shadow is a parallel novel with Ender's Game...meaning events are portrayed in both novels...Ender's Game is told from the point of view of Ender...and Ender's Shadow is told from the point of view of a kid named Bean. Both take place, for a large part, on a Battle station (Battle school) in space. The military is training young children (starting at the age of 6 or 7) and preparing them for war against aliens. They are both very good books.

Ender's Game is such a good book, that I would recommend that if it's not too much trouble to acquire it (library) you should read it first. But I don't think it is something that you HAVE to read first. Since I read Ender's Game before Ender's Shadow, it's hard to unread a book and get a clear perspective on if the book can truly stand alone.

I recommend reading Ender's Game (if you haven't already) before reading Ender's Shadow. OS Card says it shouldn't matter which one you read first, but I disagree... SciFi sets up it's own set of rules about how the universe functions and I think that the universe that Ender and Bean live in is explained a little more clearly in "Game". And yes,do read them. The Ender's Game series is my all time favorite. Characters with heart and soul. A writer with a depth of understanding of human nature unparalleled.

It's an excellent book. It covers the same span of time (more or less) that's covered in Ender's Game, but rather than following Ender, it follows Bean, and tells the store from HIS perspective.

It is scifi not Fantasy, but it is an absolutely wonderful book.

It raises some great issues about acceptance and belonging. I found it to be quite entertaining.

You should read Ender's Game first though.
