Why was it normal to marry underage people in biblical times (and even today in some states) and today would be a crime to be with a person under 18 years of age?

People in biblical times were lucky to live to 40. They wanted a woman to give birth asap which is why they let very young girls marry.

life expectancy would have a lot to do with it.
also the role of women is very different today than what it was in biblical times

One, we have longer life spans so that isn't necessary anymore. Two, we now know it can be physically and emotionally damaging.
