1st, turn off the computer. Open up your computer. You can take the Ram out and see if it has the name of the company. Some do some dont.
If it does NOT have the name of the company. your second best bet is to get the manufactuer and model of the motherboard. You can look those up on the internet. Then it will tell you what type of memory is accepted on your computer.
If you bought a dell or gateway or soemthing like, you can go to their website and look up your model. Usually it tells you what kind of memory is in there and what kind is acceptable

XP has nothing to do with it it will only tell you how much ram you have.
You need to check your manufacturers specifications on which Speeds are compatible with your system, if this is a brand name computer you should be able to look this up on their websites, if this was a generic/build by friend, hand me down computer etc... Your best bet is to open the case and pull one of the sticks which SHOULD list the size and speed of the memory stick.

XP won't tell you, you will need to know the processor, and speed of the ram and type. This can sometimes be obtained by knowing the PC maker and the model number if it is a factory machine.

I recommend going to the web site of the motherboard manufacturer. Plug in the model number of your motherboard (should have been supplied with the documentation when you bought your computer) in google, and it will take you right to the site. Look for the memory and you will see just what your motherboard can take.
I hope this helps.

open the box, find the exact part number of the motherboard, and google it, is one way. If it's a built and branded system, google the model number
squinting at the memory that is already there will help only a little
