I have a Cobalt Blue Tarantula, although I would recommend something else for a beginner. There are kinds that live in trees, on the ground and underground. Ones that live in burrows rarely come out and arboreal spiders tend to be un-friendly. They need only small enclosures so a five gallon tank is fine with a close-fitting lid. Their bite isn't deadly - just locally irritating unless you are allergic to their venom (more likely if you are allergic to bee/wasp stings). Four to six crickets a week is sufficient and a shallow water dish, but some tarantulas like high humidity so you may have to mist the cage.
Take the time to learn how to recognize males from females. Mature males live for a maximum of 18 months, females for 20 years. It is something to consider when purchasing your spider.

You could ask BEETLE.
He knows a lot about tarantulas.
So why don't you ask him.
Oh and he is a avatar.

I'd recommend buying some books. There are also message boards like http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/ that are great for finding out info. Care differs greatly from species to species, so you'll want to find out what kinds are available in your area or whether you are interested in having one shipped to you before you know specifically what kind of set-up you're going to need.

Ask BEETLE (avatar) - in the zoology (under science & math) section - I know this isn't an "insect" - but there are a lot of those kinds of posts there...BEETLE is an entomologist...
