fill a ziplock baggy with water and hang it whereever the flies are. I don't know why it works, but it does.

You can't repel them, but you can catch them if you put colored dish soap that smells like fruit (like JOY) in a small bowl (put about 1/4 cup in) and let it sit out on the counter. It works like glue. Flies get stuck in it an die.
