1. how much revising does someone do as part of the writing process?

As a writer for the media I'm constantly revising. I really feel like your work can always be better. The initial refusal process begins with reading out loud. And each time the piece gets better and better. Yet at the same time you know train yourself what to look for. You learn your weaknesses and you constantly fix things.

2. What does revision teach you about writing?
Revising had taught me to find my own voice and style. I also learned what I need work on, grammar wise. After making the same mistake over and over again, I learn to be on the lookout for those mistakes and fix them as I'm writing. So ultimately, I get better and better the more I write.

3. What role does revision play in producing a good essay?
I can't believe that in High School I would submit papers without revising them. First drafts are often inconsistent with thoughts, sloppy grammar, and not concise. A good essay is able to get your point across to your reader and make you believe your side of the argument. An unrevised paper just fails on all accounts. Revising at the very least once helps tremendously.

On a side note, I also hate people who don't spell check papers. In the real world, mis-spellings is something that just doesn't happen. Relying on spell check isn't great either due.

1. Well that depends on how good of a writer you are, you can revise a line or two to entire paragraphs
2. It teaches you to go over your work and find ways to improve it and get a better grade if you are in school. When you are writing you have to make sure that not only you can understand but your audience (teacher, classmates, boss, etc) can understand the point you are trying to get across in your essay.
3. Revision plays a huge role in producing a good essay

Revision is terribly important. If your text is full of spelling or grammatical errors, it's not going anywhere. If you tend to use the same word(s) all the time, you show poor vocabulary. Writing is a craft. You must work hard at it . The French always talk about "le fond et la forme", which basically mean that what you want to say is important (the meat of the matter) but how you say it (a poem, a short story...) is important as well.
