I t WAS a new, good quality stainless steel cooking pot. Was heating some oil and it caught fire (luckily no major damage to kitchen). Got off the usual burnt buildup with a steelo pad but walls of pot are blackened - any ideas? Any help much appreciated, thanks!

Fill up your sink with the hottest water possible (even add boiling water) and dissolve 1/2 cup dishwasher granuals in the water. Stir with a utensil and put the pot in the water. Let it soak for a few hours. Make sure the pot is not aluminum or it wil ruin the pan. Take out after a few hours and scrub with a scotch brite sponge and should be good as new.

I own a very expensive set of stainless steel cookware... I use BAR KEEPERS FRIEND on them. Use a soft rag like an old washcloth; and scrub away. This is a stainless steel cleaner & polisher. It will remove the marks and not scratch the pot.

Try using a paste of baking soda and a scrubby pad with a little dish soap on it. It'll take a while, but it will work: I've used that often to get burnt food off my pans.

Use a powder product called "Clean King". You can get it at any grocery store/target! Simply dab some powder on the area, mix with a little water, and scrub like the dickens! But it'll come out really shinny and all fixed!

I am the queen of the burned pots. Believe it or not mix cream of tarter and water than scrub the pan. I am lazy at times and have had luck with boiling the pan with cream of tarter mixture and water in a larger pan.

if none of the other answers work, there is a "chrome polish" for motorcicle exhausts, it completely removes tarnish, burn marks etc, I dont remember what the stuff is called but you should be able to pick it up at an automotive store

They make a glass top stove cleaner & special scrub pads. You can get them both at target or walmart. Then you just have to work on it.

It's probably burned oil...a good degreaser should work. Don't use typical 409. I would try something stronger like purple power.

If SOS won't take it out, you're SOL I think...

You might try boiling water in it to loosen up the burn too...but SOS is your best bet. It may take a lot of elbow grease, but it should at least help.
