I and several members of my family take Benadryl (or generic diphenhydramine) from time to time, and none of us has EVER noticed any change to our moods. Not in the least.
However, that doesn't mean it can't affect someone that way. Every person's body is different, and you never know what type of side effect you'll end up with. For whatever reason, diphenhydramine (the generic name of Benadryl) messes with your mood.
I do know that a LOT of people seem to get very cranky and/or moody when they take the anti-inflammatory drug Prednisone (cortisone). I've no idea why that happens. I know many folks who've taken Prednisone, and only a few have had that occur, but apparently it's more common than I once thought.
And then there's me. *chuckle* I had to take Tylenol with Codeine when I cracked a rib, and I heard so many bad things about Codeine. Everything from it'll make me want to sleep for 12 hours, to it'll make me want to throw up, to it'll make me as unsafe as a drunk driver! Well, NONE of that happened! I drove, went to work, did all the normal everyday things with no trouble. The only thing I noticed was that I was a little more "giddy" and "silly" than usual, but I'm like that anyway, so most folks never even noticed! *giggle*

When my allergies are really really bad I take Benadryl and do not feel that sleepy - and the relief from allergy symptoms makes me feel much better. When my allergies are not that bad, then the Benadryl makes me groggy and sleepy. And Zyrtec - ugh! I feel miserable and wiped out on that stuff.
I know that a lot of these drugs do not affect everyone the same way. I am sure glad that we have more choices now. Though I hate feeling like a crook or a drug addict when I have to go to the counter to buy Sudafed.
You might try a smaller dose of the Benadryl and see if that has a better affect on you.

Benadryl has a really long half-life. So, even though you take it at night it's drowsiness inducing effects are still evident in the morning. Sleepy equals cranky for me!

Maybe it's because Benadryll makes you very sleepy and when you're tired you're much crabbier than when you're full of energy.

It's probably just because it makes you so tired.
