You've encountered a true salesman (or person). If they're able to get away with this, then the next thing they'll try to do is claim "ear-sweat" causes the water damage. You should ask for this guy's supervisor, then call your Better Business Bureau and let them know what kind of weasels your dealing with at Verizon.

I am in Central Florida. The humidity is at 100% everyday in summer. I have NEVER had damage caused by humidity.
What they mean may be water damage caused by CONDENSATION. If you were in a very cold place (freezer) for a while and come out into a warm humid air, significant amount of moisture will collect inside.
If that's the case, I'd be inclined to understand. But moisture alone, no....
They have to prove the problem was caused by a mositure, before they deny you the coverage, too. It will be too convenient of a reason if no poof were required.

How did the Verizon rep determine your cell phone had water damage? Did he/she perform a physical inspection, or did they just come up with it as an excuse to sell you a new phone?
You can check if your phone has water damage yourself. Simply remove the black lid. There should be a circle the diameter of a pencil eraser near the battery. If the circle is white, the rep is lying, there has been no water damage. If it's red, then water has reached the phone's interior.

Even if high humidity did cause the water damage what else is insurance for?!?!?! Now if he was talking about the warranty that is true the warranty does not cover water damage, but the whole point of insurance is to cover the phone no matter what happens. Water damage should definitely be covered by insurance.

As with any electonic devive if you have it in a cool environment and then take it to a place that is very humid moisture will condense on everthing that is cool.
including the insides of your phone. might as well throw it in your toilet.
your phone was designed pretty poorly
cause most phones are sealed up enough to handle temp humidity changes, other wise most of the phones in Iowa would have shot craps yesterday

Unless you hang out in the steam sauna with your cell phone, it is not likely. Like someone else said, extreme fluctuations between cold and hot can cause condensation, but humidity itself does not usually do that.

Well this would be your fault for expecting god service from verizon wireless.... you need to ditch them go anywhere else... t-mobile will exchange your phone for free if you are having problems with it!!! Switch now and save nerves and money!!! Plus GET MORE FROM LIFE!!!

Same here... my battery wont take a charge so they told me I have to replace the entire phone. Sounds like BS to me. Luckily my phone is paid for by my company.
