I don't even recognize Marvel Comics anymore. And all of these movies!!!! They should have called Spiderman "The Spiderman Flavored Movie".

There should have been a disclaimer that said
"Caution: This movie may contain some Spiderman"

or
"Caution: This movie was made in a factory that also processes Spiderman."

or
"This movie contains no real Spiderman Juice."

They ARE more interested in making money than they are in making comic books. I don't see the harm in trying to capture the attention of the new aydience, but do they have to totally re-design EVERYTHING in order to do so?!?!!? Couldn't they just make tons of new characters geared to the new audience and then weave them into the world of the original characters?? I once wanted to draw comics for Marvel, but the past ten years has turned me against the concept.

*grin* I love that ...a factory that also processes spiderman" ..thats good.
I almost turned the lights out on my comic collection. I got sick of the movies and spin offs of movies and sequels to spin offs of movies.... there was more self important pimping of 1 dimensional characters being churned out by hollywood than a friday night with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
What the hell happened to spiderman? I dont remember him being as morose as batman I remember him being a wise-A$$ and sort of cheerful.

Hmm and just when I hit the end of my rope, I started to read independant comics. The hernandez bros, dan clowes, thompson, the tick, some odds and ends manga....stuff that hollywood can't sell because its just too damned unmarketable...
I like comics again...I even look for good online comics by artists and writers who have stuff to say..and its not slick stuff..its good stuff.

I sympathize. You may not remember the days (ask some older fans to tell you about them) when Steve Gerber, who originated Howard the Duck was suing Marvel because they claimed that since he developed Howard while he was working for them, he could not take Howard with him to any other company when he left Marvel.

Gerber lost the suit (they really raked him over the coals) but inspired a lot of other artists and writers to follow his lead, so that now a standard feature of writers' contracts is to demand the right to take characters that you originate with you. Gerber created 'Destroyer Duck' and a lot of artists and writers conributed their best work for free to fund his lawsuit.

Marvel was nervous at the time (who wouldn't be.) So they modified a lot of their most visually recognizable characters, so that if the courts went against them, they could say, This isn't the original character! and keep on publishing them that way. They may not be very honest, but they're not dumb!

That was when Spider Man got the black costume (during Secret Wars) which turned out to be an alien symbiote which became Venom and led to all those plot lines.

Hulk went grey (He was originally grey, until a colorist's error made him green, and the readers liked him better that way.) That led to the Hulk's multiple-personalities, and all the stories those led to.

The US governement stripped Steve Rogers of the Captain America assignment, and gave it to someone else! So he wore s black and white version of his suit and a plain shleld, and called himself 'The Captain'...! (Though I never found out if they gave him a sidekick named Gilligan.)

Iron Man was in a hurry and went out with his latest suit of armor plain metal with a mirror-finish (slivery) instead of painting it gold.

Thor had to wear a suit of Asgardian armor for some reason or another.

You get the idea. Was that when the xmen started wearing those black suits instead of their distinctively styled costumes...? I don't remember for sure.

anyhow, like I said, I sympathize. Comic books have turned into big business. It's a sad day for all who are kids in America, and even for those who are just kids at heart.

First off, ALL businesses do what they do for money no matter what era you live in.

Second, a comic book is completely different than a movie. Comics can be drawn to fit the story, taylor made in any way the writer deems necessary. With movies, you're dealing with producers, actors, studio executives, etc. etc. Actors can't be as adaptable as ink on paper, nor can actors be adjusted or changed as easily. Another thing too... comics can be more forgiving to a storyline simply because they have month-after-month to improve things. In movies, you either hit the mark or miss it.

Amen to that brother..

Except I enjoy Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics from the 50s and 60s.. And like you were saying the new ones drawn are totally differnt. Looks more like Ren and Stimpy now!

It's called "hey Manga is doing well, let's get some crap out there before it passes..and quick!"

Yes. And then the geeks made money, so the corporations came into play. And corporations will do whatever they can get away with to make more money.

These days the new generation of Geeks are publishing their comics online.
