That is REALLY annoying, I've last many offline messages since I started using Messenger, I don't think that it's possible to retrieve them. They won't be in your message archives, because I think you have to respond to offline messages for them to be in there. I think that they are gone, which really does suck.

when you close the offline message box they are gone iff your not archieving your messages , offline messages become archieved if your achieve setting is on
