When should a group of people be able to declare independence from their government? Under what conditions would you support allowing a group in your own nation to form a separate nation of their own?

I mean this as a more general question, not just relating to an American state seceding from the Union (though you may certainly answer the question from that angle). Try to think of it this way...if some group of people were fighting for independence in another country, when would you support their cause, and when would you support the cause of that country to maintain its integrity?

Secession is an antiquated term that had meaning early in the history of our Republic when the union between states was extremely fragile. At this point, power has shifted substantially from the states to the federal government and therefore, secession is extremely unlikely. Besides, those who would consider such a radical move represent a fraction of the population and could never develop the political power to succeed.

Go to one of the little uninhabited islands in the Pacific Ocean. Take only the supplies with you that the government didn't support, regulate, or have something to do with. Call your little island "Fantasy Island" because that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
