If an 18 ft pole casts a 6 ft shadow. Therefore the shadow is 1/3 its actual height. SO if the man is 6 ft 3". Then the shadow would be 1/3 * 6 ft 3".
Which gives you 2ft 1".

The man's shadow is 2 ft and 1 inch.

Have a nice day.

Here is what the idea is. Make a triangle out of the flagpole and its shadow (connect the tip of the shadow to the tip of the flagpole). Now do the same for the man and his shadow. Physically draw this on a piece of paper so you can visualize it.

Since the sun is shining on them both at the same angle, you know that the 2 triangles both have the same angle at the top. Also, since these are (presumably) right triangles, this means that the angle at the bottom must be the same as well (since the sum of the angles must total to be 180 degrees or Pi radians).

They are similar triangles by SSS, this means that the corresponding sides must be proportional to eachother. That is

(height of man) / (height of pole) = (length of man's shadow) / (length of pole's shadow)

Since you know 3 of those, you can solve for the 4th (the length of the man's shadow).

P.S. What kind of heartless school assigns MATH problems to do over summer? I mean I've heard of summer reading, but COME ON! Anyway, I feel for you.

got it 2ft 1 inch
18 divide 3 = 6
6 divide 3 = 2
3 divide 3 =1
oops 3 inches is 3/12 or 1/4
still divide this by the 3 and you still get the 1
3 divide 3 =1
and 1/12 is still 1

if you need decimals divide the 1/4 divide that by 3 and get the .0833333333333333 which is .08 and 1/3 if you try to put it back together you get .999999999999996 which is 1 for some reason i get a headache trying to figure it out

Proportions
3 in = 3/12 feet = 1/4 feet
6 1/4 feet = 25/4 feet
18/6 = (25/4)/x
3 = (25/4)/x
Multiply both sides by x
3x = 25/4
Divide both sides by 3
x = (25/4)/3
x = (25/4)(1/3)
x = 25/12
x = 2 1/12 feet = 2 ft 1 in

His shadow will be 2 ft 1 " long...
its a third of the real height... just like the flagpole shadow is 1/3 of the actual flagpole height

Calculate the angle of the shadow with respect the ground. tan^-1(18/6)=x. now the tan of x equals the person's height over the length of the shadow.

3 in is 1/4 of a foot, so the man is 6.25 ft tall. Set up a ratio, write it as a fraction and cross multiply and divide.

18:6 = 6.25:x
18/6=6.25/x
(6*6.25)/18
2.083 ft

The proportion of the flag's height to its shadow's length is equal to the proportion of the person's height to his/her shadow's lenght.
(6ft / 18ft) = (shadow / 6ft 3in)
in inches: (72in / 216in) = (shadow / 75in)
by algebra: shadow = (72/216)x75 inches
by arithmetic: shadow = 25 inches or 2ft 1in

It's a ratio problem. 18 is to 6 as 6.25 is to x. Now put 18 over 6 and set it equal to 6.25 over x and cross multiply.

6*6.25= 18x

x=2.083333333333333333333333333333333 feet
