This depends a little bit on what kind of riding you are interested in doing:
Western/Cowboy style, general purpose for like going on trails, or english for jumping or dressage?
If you are going to ride western or mainly pleasure ride on trails in that type of saddle, then jeans are sufficient although many many of those riders are wearing riding breeches now. For english disciplines, you absolutely will not enjoy riding in jeans! They rub. You can buy very inexpensive riding tights (don't worry about flattery- none of us looks fab in them, but a dark color is a little more comfy if your body type is a concern) Get them in a cotton with some spandex or stretch to them: THey come in knee patch where only the knee has a patch of leather on it or full-seat meaning they have a leather seat and inner thigh. THese can be a little more to a LOT more expensive and some people don't like them, but they are grippier and can make you feel more secure in the saddle. Also, some full-seat breeches make you feel like you've got a load in your pants and others are as comfy as skin. Its a very personal thing. Best bet is to go through State Line tack and buy a pair of basic black knee patch riding breeches that cost less than $50.
Boots are also a must. They come in western pull on, western lace ups, or english "paddock" boots which come just over the ankle and lace or zip up. I live in mine, so I have Ariat zip ups. English riders usually where tall boots that pull on, but these will come later in your riding. Paddock boots are fine for now, but you will want half-chaps to protect you lower legs from getting pinched and raw as you learn to ride- later you won't have that problem if you develop your skills enough.
Next is a shirt you don't mind getting REALLY dirty, horse snot, manure, and every sort of grime on and can tuck in so your riding instructor can see your posture.
Finally, in ANY riding discipline you need a helmet. Above all things, GET THE HELMET!!! There are super inexpensive models that have good ventilation and helmet hair is way more cool that being a drooling vegetable with head trauma. If you ride long enough you WILL fall off and heads have a way of hitting things.
Gloves are somthing you'll want if you stick with it.
But, in any case, get some appropriate pants, boots, and a helmet. If you find you don't like the riding, you can surely sell them or give them to the riding school instructor as there are always folks who will use them.
Have fun learning to ride and then you can join the rest of us who stop by the grocery store on the way home from the barn with mucky boots, riding tights with horsey prints all over our bums, snot on the shirt, helmet hair and a big grin on our faces. :-)

yes you need clothes it wouldnt be great if you rode nude just joking and you had to ask.you can wear good jeans that are worn out with no large holes. figure about 2 grand for a saddle but ive seen used for 500. you need as many reins, saddles and blankets as you have horses. a few extra blankets would be great.using the same blanket everyday can be rough on a horse.wear comfortable clothes and i would recommend long sleve shirts like panhandle slim.they are the best for riding or string wire. i would get a few estimates from a few tack shops that have clothes and riding accessories and get the lowest price.you will need the extra money to buy feed and work those critters hard because they will eat up a few hundred bucks of oats corn and sweet feed each week.be extra sure you have a few acres of good grazing land also. horses need good grass just to keep them regular. if you could lease some pasture and sow alfalfa and other protein rich grasses. its about 8 bucks a bale here in a bad year but can be cheaper.thats really the first thing you need to do is buy or lease pasture. horses are amazing animals and do need more care than others like cows unless they are milkers and beef cattle.you know all that anyway.

Hello, if you are not bying a horse, for rideing and depedning on what type of rideing, you need nothing but a pair of rideing boots, and loose crotch type paints> for easy cofortable rideing, the boots with a heel, this helps keep the foot from slipping through the stirup! Hope this helps, gensing0

no, you don't need special clothing to learn to ride horses although the stable who is doing the lessons may require english riding pants and boots with heel if you're learning english saddle. If you're learning on a western saddle you just need a comfortable pair of pants you don't mind getting a bit dirty and a decent pair of shoes (tennis shoes are fine). Most places require you use a helmet, but they typically provide it for you.

Ignore the folks who tell you not to get involved with horses. They are very rewarding and if you have the money, spend it like you want. Lessons sound like fun!
You will need jeans and boots, for sure. If you ride english you may need jodphurs and English style clothing. Western - all you really need are boots and jeans unless you show, then you will need show clothes.
Good luck and have fun!

Jeans are sufficient. If you have any shoes with a thicker heel it will do to begin. The heel aids your feet to stay in the stirrups. Boots are designed for this.
Western clothing is optional.
There's a whole history of boot design for horseback and stirrups.
