That's a good question. I think the hillbillys live out in the country...maybe grow marijuana and/or drink whiskey or make their own shine...Anyway, they're wild country boys without manners, rude and crude
Rednecks are usually country people, but they don't necessarily live way out there, sometimes in or around small towns, usually in old houses or trailerhouses. They usually spit tobacco and drink tons of beer. They usually drive old pickups or old cars.

I would say a hillbilly lives really far out from the city, kind of Kellie Pickler from American Idol, didn't know a lot about things. A redneck is more white trashy, knows better but doesn't care.

Well, they are both derogatory terms, but hillbilly is a bit more acceptable since it can simply mean a rural or isolated mountain person. So, in other words, not all hillbillies are rednecks.

A hillbilly is a person from the hills ( my mom and dad).
A redneck is a person like me, country good ol' boy. Not from the hills.

they are both negative terms.. whether used as an attack or to describe ones self. the term redneck came from farmers and ranchers..and folks out in the sun so long..that their necks turn red..while the rest of their body is covered and remain..untanned. hillbilly is used for those who are country and come from the hills of a state..usually in the south. neither word is bad alone... it is how it is used that makes it offensive to some. over the years.. people have tried to make these two words more humorous. in past.. both words usually were slanted to poorer people and usually whites.

A redneck wears wranglers, a baseball or cowboy hat, boots or sneakers and drives a 4 wheel drive Toyota.
A hillbilly wears over alls, shoes sometimes and probably doesn't have a truck and if he does, it doesn't run.

Rednecks are more outgoing... the hill billy is rather a rare specimen as they like to stay in the mountains... rednecks venture into town more often and are sparked by alcoholic drinks

personally... a hillbilly is just one of those stupid people who sit on their porches all day while chewing on sum tobacco and dont have a brain in their head. a redneck is just a southern person but not so dumb or poor.
