I would disagree with the rebel....I don't think the cruiser bars are as confidence inspiring to new riders as straight bars. Also that little 250 engine is gonna spend a lotta time workin' really hard to keep up with those INSANE Montana speed limits(or lack of) I would suggest a bike with straight bars and a standard seating position. If you want a dirt bike(dualsport), get something with some CC's (like 350 or more) if your gonna spend time on the highway, Otherwise a Honda xl250 or a Kawasaki KLR250 would probably suit you very well(if your over 200-225lbs go for the 350, you won't be sorry), or the Suzuki DR's are also very good. As for a street only bike, Id recommend a early to mid 90's Suzuki GS500E. They are not to big, not to small, have a comfortable seating position, they handle very well for a bike in their class, they have confidence inspiring straight super bike style bars, and with a small faring can be quite comfortable at 75-80 on the highway. The Power delivery from the twin cylinder engine is very smooth and there is quite a bit more of it than a Honda rebel, those things are REALLY gutless. When you get more experienced, you will find that that bike will also keep up with your skill until your ready to jump on something quite a bit faster. Personally, I think a 250 is way to small for any streetbike unless im using it to teach my 110lb petite girlfriend to ride on it. Its a good size for a beginner dirt bike though, but you won't be too comfy on the highway for long. Either way, welcome to the world of motorcycles, may all of your experiences be thrilling and fun!!!

My first bike was a '93 honda shadow vlx. It was a great first bike because it was small (like the rebel) but also had a big enough engine to hold it's own when I was ready to get on the freeway.
But everybody is different think about your individual needs -
Consider your height and weight - just make sure you feel like it's small enough that if starts to tip over a little bit you can comfortably stop the fall with your foot and bring it back up.
Consider how you'll do most of your riding - in town? on the freeway? in what weather conditions?
And of course - take the motorcycle safety course - not only will it save your neck time and time again, you'll get a discount on your insurance :)

get a quad (4 wheeler) that's what i learned on first to get use to the clutch and gas sequence. then after a year of riding the quad i bought a 2006 yamaha r6 just 3 months ago and i have no problem at all. i was a little shaky at first but Ive put over 3000 miles on the bike and now I'm very comfortable with it and never had any problem. but when you get or bike go with what fits you, like in seat height, power and comfort. and after go to a big parking lot to practice for at least a hour before going into traffic. and also take the motorcycle training course, its free in most states and after your training you get your endorsement.

There is NO Harley that is suitable for novice riders, regardless of what the twinkies think.
The Honda 250cc Rebel is one of the motorcycles that MSF instructors use because its one of the easiest to learn on. You can find them easy enough for a good prices, and they're easy enough to sell or trade if , later, you decide you want something larger.
Wear protective clothing and a helmet.
