To play mediator. Every country selects a representative. That rep speaks for their country regarding all political aspects. The UN gets together for a summit to discuss current events and how to maintain peace in our world, financial abilities and assistance programs for those in need.

The original idea of the United Nations began with the League of Nations and a treaty called the Kellogg-Briand Pact. The LoN and KBP were created after WWI was over and the world saw how devastating it was (especially to Europe). So the LoN and KBP were created in an attempt to stop wars before they started.
The LoN was supposed to mediate disputes between nations. However, like the UN, it had no standing army and no real way to enforce any of its directives. It failed to solve many conflicts, especially the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, the Czech border disputes, and the Spanish Civil War. The LoN folded as WWII started.
The KBP outlawed war among its signatories. You can guess how well this went.
The UN has essentially the same aims as the LoN. It wants to stop global conflict, help those in need, and protect the innocent. However, it suffers from even more problems. It has also been derided as toothless because of the unenforceability. It seems to have a large amount of bias towards the United States, Great Britain, and Israel. It has been derided for putting countries like Cuba, the Sudan, Iran, and China on the Human Rights Council because of the lack of freedoms and poor human rights records of these countries.
The UN seems doomed to failure. At least until Nicolae Carpathia comes along.

The United Nations was founded in the interest of keeping the peace throughout the world. They do this by maintaining an open dialogue between the member nations so as to resolve or at least diminish conflicts before they come to war.

The function of the UN is to be a place where differences could be solved between countries without having to go to war. Idealistic dream because it does not work. Throughout my lifetime I would say their role was to take US money and spend it on programs that are usually anti-american.

The idea is that the leaders of all of the nations get together and attempt to make decisions and keep the peace. Not working so well right now.

Well right now, the only thing they are good at is being ineffectual, taking bribes for votes from other countries, and not upholding the resolutions they vote in. If they all were in the corporate world, they would be F I R E D!

Its no surprise you arent sure what they do, because they dont really seem to do anything. Countries have no respect for the resolutions they crank out, and lately the organization has should quite a bit of corruption.
Its a worthless bunch of world bueracuracy, red tape, hot air, and it should be disbanded.
