I mean, let's face it, there are people out there that are a risk to themselves and others. I'm not excluding myself either, we recently had to tell 87 year old Grampa that he just couldn't drive any more. He is deaf beyond recovery, starting to get Alzheimer's, and lives in a treacherous part of Appalachia. How could we not take his keys?
What about you, don't you think there comes a time when Grand Dad or Mom should have to hang up the driver's keys?

I live in South Florida, where there's a ridiculously high elderly population, and the streets are a much more dangerous place because of it. Every week there's another story about a 90 year old driver who loses control and plows into a store front or bus stop or park bench.

Starting at age 70, ALL drivers should have to take vision and reflex tests once a year in order to keep their licenses. Fail a test, learn to use public transport. Period. It would definitely save lives.

I was talking about this with a friend recently. A couple of weeks ago an 89 year old man here in Connecticut ran over 29 people who were waiting to cross some railroad tracks after a boating festival.
If the state had to re-test EVERYONE it would cost a fortune, and where would that money come from? Our pockets, in taxes and increased fees.
Instead I think there should be a kind of lottery of random testing. Those chosen to be tested have to pay $20 more but they should then get a break on their car insurance to make up for it.

If you're under 20, you don't get re-tested.
20-30 5% chance of having to re-take test to renew
30-40 10%
40-50 15%
50-60 20%
60-70 30%
70-80 40%
80-90 50%
90+ 60%
My dad has Alzheimer's. He drove for about a year after his diagnosis and then voluntarily gave up his keys

Absolutely! Set age limit at 65-70 and retest every 2 years. Or have them only allowed to drive with other driver if necessary.

It is for their safety and for the safety of others . Sure there are many safe ones but it will save lives no doubt.

Besides we use the same reasoning to only allow kids to start driving at a certain age. Same applies here.

I think people should have to retake the test every 10-20 years just to make sure they remember all the stuff. Not just wether they are actually cabable or not. But that too. My great great aunt was driving until she was 94 I think. She too was horrible. She always drove in the middle of 2 lanes... Lucky most of the time she only drove on 4 lane streets or not busy ones.

I totally agree!!! I have been in two car accidents in my life, and both time I was hit by an 82 year old person. I get nervous when I see an older person driving next to me. I feel sorry for them, but there comes a time when you have to give it up. They definatly need to make them re take the tests after a certain age.

I agree. I have witnessed blue hair and knuckles peeking over the steering wheel and wonder how they are driving!

They cause very dangerous accidents, sudden acceleration from mistaking the brake for the gas pedal is one of them.

I think after the age of 75 the Department of Motor Vehicles owes it to the public to test elder drivers yearly to determine if they are able to drive.

yes they should...once they hit a certain age they should be made to retake their drivers test...we had an accident here yesterday...a 75 year old woman crossed the median of the highway and hit 3 cars and kept going...she killed a man...i don't think she should of even been out on the roads...my grandpop (he's 90) isn't allowed to drive because he runs light and stop signs..he just isn't as aware as he should be...

Yes, the eldely should have to take tests annually to test reaction-time, vision, rules of the road, etc... But they should also have means to get around because being cooped up in the house is not good.
