Off the wall I would say its short for emote. Something we do when we act or sing or give a talk in front of other people. Its also a name for a rock band. Oh by the way, emotion is hard to show on the computer so it may be the moniker of those yellow round icons some people find cute.

I don't think they are an acronym. I was under the belief that emo was short for emotional like emotional rockers (as in the whiny pseudo-musical crap perpetuated by the falsetto male singers of these bands). But I could be wrong.

Emo: a spin-off of punk rock. It strays from the normal in-your-face side of punk, into to a more, let's say, cry-about-everything-life-is-pointless-why-does-everyone-hate-me mindset. Same clothes, only alot tighter.
