I feel the best age to get a phone is going to be what the parents want the prime use of the phone to be. Verizon offers a great program to track you child and set up safe zones for them see the site for details. If I had to put an age on it I would say 6

when a person can keep a goldfish...and I don't mean the crackers...alive for more than a week. the person then is responsible enough in my opinion to have a cell phone. And yes owning a cell phone does have responsiblities...like not giving preditors online the number, not cheating on tests using it, and following school rules regarding cell phones.

depends on the child. 16 for driving of course (so if they break down)

if the child goes out a lot with friends, i think sooner. So they can call parents if they're going to be late or need to be picked up because a ride fell through. If they tend to have friends over, or stay home a lot 16 would suffice

My daughter was given one at 12 and it caused nothing but trouble. I don't think age is relevant but maturity. Some teens will use it to scheme and make plans behind their parents back. There is also the problem of txt bullying so make sure your child/you are mature enough to handle it. Generations before did just fine without.
