He was the guy who was living in the hatch when they first went down there. Jack also had met him before back in real life on the same day that he met his future wife they were both running up and down a big stadium and desmond said to Jack 'see you in another life' - freaky!!!!

Desmond was in a race around the world in Libby's boat when he crashed on the island where he was found by a Dharma Initiative worker who thought he was his replacement. When the *Losties* enter the hatch, and almost do not enter the code, he runs away to escape what will happen when the timer goes down below zero. He returns at the end of the second season telling the Losties that he tried to sail away but he couldnt get away from the island.

We first saw Desmond in one of Jack's flashbacks. I can't remember which episode exactly. It was the episode where it showed he (Jack) lost a patient and went to the stadium to run the stairs and work off his frustrations. Desmond was there as well and they had a brief conversation.
The next time we saw him was when they first entered the hatch. He had been manning the computer...

you'll learn more about him at the end of season 2. besides running the hatch, he was in one of jack's flashbacks at some point, too. they only met briefly. can't remember if that was the beginning of season two or the end of season one, though.
