There is a recent commission that began a nationwide campaign to protect the rights of girls in China, rewarding those families which prefer to have only one child even if it is a girl. Some women, particularly those with a low-level education, even choose to have an abortion if they find their first infant is due to be a girl. How do you think this policy will effect the population in terms of sex? It appears that the male - female ratio will be scaled towards the males.

Sounds like a good policy for china. Now its birth rate will go down like crazy in the next few generations and the people will suffer heavily under a communist government. Under their system the workers pay the heaviest and old people cant work. I hope im alive to see socialism in china collapse.

A few things to keep in mind (based on a recent 3 week stay in China)
1. Farmers can have as many children as they want.
2. City dwellers also can have a many children as they want BUT the government will only provide benefits, like education and health care for one child.
3. There is no bias against having a girl. Girls in China become women and they work at all levels which mitigates the old rule that the son provided for the welfare of senior parents.

The dissolution of the Chinese nuclear family is very interesting. Educated children no longer hang around the town or city in which they were born and in which their parents live. The educated youth of China are off to chase the "brass ring" like youth everywhere. In any major Chinese city ask a young adult -what are you aspirations? Their answer is the 4 "c's" - a car, cash, a condo and a credit card.

The dissolution of the Chinese nuclear family is causing a huge social security problem in China where men are normally retired at 60 and women at 55. A fact our guide was very proud of - "even better than in the U.S." The fact is they retire at these ages to create jobs for the burgeoning population of young adults. The life span of Chinese men and women is on a par with those in the West and this rapidly growing senior citizen population is a great threat to the continued rapid economic growth of China.

Look for the Chinese government to adjust their one child policy when their demographic analyses suggest it is no longer in their best interest
