I agree with clcalifornia,,, to me its a "learned behavior", it started at home,, it will end at home, and its up to all of us to ended.
I think people, in my opinion, are racists mainly because they are afraid, scared to death, that someone "far beneath them" can be better than they (its all in their mind that anyone could be better than anyone), they are very often angry, uneducated, ignorant, with low self-esteem, and they need to find a particular group of people and blame that group for all their frustrations and failures.
Most of these people have never been out of their own backyards, and when they get to travel, if they are lucky, they come to a big surprise that these other peoples, from other cultures and countries, no matter which one, have people just as educated, refined, with a rich culture as any other, some even where racism is non existent, then they realize that their own little racist world is just a big sad lie.
sometimes I wish some of these racists that I see here wasting their time, spreading their hate and anger, would use the internet to see the world, visit other countries, educate themselves, wake up to the lie they are living in....

Prejudice will always exist; skin color is obvious (even if you just take it as being like the difference between wearing a green shirt and wearing a blue shirt, like I do) and easy to hang on to.
In pop culture, black people are almost always the ones with guns, the ones beating each other up (or beating people up for their employers), the ones who steal or have drug problems or are crazy.
Rap music is dominated by black people, and the lyrics in the popular rap tunes are pretty much, "N-----, I'm gonna rape your girlfriend, then steal your car, then castrate you with an eggbeater, don't f--- with me, yo," so that really doesn't help the image much.
Anyone who wants to classify billions of people in to one narrow personality type because of their skin color is an idiot.

now, since i'm just a high school student, and not a college professor, i'm not sure if my answer is accurate. But i thought i would give it a shot anyway. I believe the reason is quite simple. Our parents were taught this. then they taught us. it's not like "blacks are bad. stay away" or "whites think they are better than blacks" no no. our parents sometimes say innappropraite things. and we watch movies. most blacks are carrying guns and are criminals. it's sad, but true. my dad is racist. he says comments about black ppl ALL THE TIME. it really hurts. almost like obesity. he contributes racist comments just like mcdonalds contributes to obesity. it's really sad. and now that i look back on my life, i think i may be a little racist as well. I hate thinking like that. but it;s something that has been welded into my head just like adolf hitler did to germany. he kept saying over and over and over jews are the enemy. at first, ppl thought he was crazy. but the more he said it, the more the ppl believed it. that's what happened to me. and it saddens me deeply. i can't run completely away from it, but at least i can be a little more caring and open-minded. i hope my answer has helped you out.

PEOPLE ARE STUBBORN AND THEY DON'T WANT TO BE THE FIRST TO EXTENT THE HAND OF ACCEPTANCE AND FORGIVENESS, FOR FEAR OF REJECTION, NOT ONLY FROM THE PERSON YOU ARE REACHING OUT TO, BUT REJECTION AND RIDICULE FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND ALOT OF PEOPLE CAN 'T FIGHT THAT.I CAN REMEMBER WHEN MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS SHOT,I HEARD IT ON THE RADIO, AND I STOOD ,A LITTLE 7 YEAR OLD WHITE GIRL IN THE SOUTH,CRYING BECAUSE EVEN AS YOUNG AS I WAS I KNEW IT WAS WRONG, BUT I STILL HAD TO DEFEND MY FEELINGS ABOUT RASICM TO ADULTS IN MY FAMILY BEFORE HE WAS KILLED AND AFTER, AND HAVE TO THIS DAY, IT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW DEEPLY THIS ISSUE EFFECTS YOU,AND EVERY ONE ELSE, IF IT WILL EVER CHANGE

Because people like Jessie Jackson like to keep it stirred up. Without causing some sort of controversy, he might have to get a real job. Why are people racist against islams. Maybe it's because some of their people flew jets into our buildings and killed thousands of Americans.

Ignorence is the biggest thing that is passed from generation.
