It depends on how well you know both parties. If you knew the uncles father well then you can say you will miss _____ about this person but will always have great memories of the time you spent together. I hate the standard line "I'm sorry for your loss" it sounds impersonal. During a loss it is sometimes nice to remember the happy times and not the present sad times. Even though I do not know your situation you are showing great compassion for both individuals in asking how to best help your uncle. Good luck!

Walk up to him and tell him " I am so sorry for your loss"

I'm sure he is already getting the mile long speaches from people.. something small and simple is always nice.
