Katamari Damancy is great because it is unlike any game that we currently have over here in America. I can't speak for all Americans, but I get REALLY tired of 100 racing/fighting/rpg games being released at the same time. They are all the same game with different characters. Katamari Damacy was the Holy Grail I was looking for. You can pick it up and play it without having to learn complex controls that take weeks if not years to master. (try gran turismo or virtua fighter 4 sometime).

It is popular with americans, in my opinion for the following reasons.

1. It was released at $29.99 at a time where EVERY new game was $50.00. Many people tried it simply because they could afford it.

2. It is a breath of fresh air from the typical spoon fed games we usually get over here.

3. Anything crazy and Japanese is wildly popular with a good percentage of Americans. (check out morning musume on www.youtube.com sometime, you will LOVE it!)

4. How much fun is it to roll up everything in a house, roll out the door and start rolling up the city? TONS O FUN. It lets you take out your aggression and stomp on a city! Never since Rampage have we had so much fun in a video game. :)

5. The King is just so cool. The stuff he says is so random and bizarre that you have to find it funny!

6. No buttons to push! Just use both thumbsticks to move. Genius!

7. and finally.... Pill shaped heads! Americans love secret drug referances! Look at 90% of rock and roll songs. They are about drugs! (disclaimer... Dont do drugs kiddies. drugs are bad MMMkay? They will make you feel good and thats BAD!)

If I could speak Japanese, I would live there!

Katamari Damancy is mostly popular because its diffrent. Being popular isnt the same as being good, like Britney Spears. In her "Good" days.

Yeah, it has more of a cult following, though.
