The Civil War was about more than slavery and many southerns felt that Lincoln would declare war on them. It also involved northern merchants using tariffs to punish the Southern. Also, Southerns believed in the doctrine of nullification (see Madison, Jefferson, and Calhoun) which stated that states were supreme and could nullify federal law.

The issue of slavery was sidestepped throughout the tenuous beginnings of the US. There was supposed to be an end to slavery 20 years after the ratification of the constitution, but that never happened. Although political parties tried to hammer out differences, the Southern economy was thought to be tied directly to slavery.

The South was a very agrarian society, and rather fractured in terms of politics. The rich landowners needed slaves on their plantations, whereas most Northerners didn't see the need for slaves in the cities. Because the industrial North and the agrarian South had such radically different economies, the slavery issue was bound to come to a head, which it did in the Civil War.

The Southern states also saw that the Union was not really serving their needs as much as those of the larger (in population) Northern states. So rather than change their economy, they decided to secede.

As with another answerer, I believe Texas AND California should secede. It would make for an interesting economy indeed for the remaining 48 states.

Hope that helps!

Well the idea was not to wreck the Union, or the South. The believed greatly that the Federal Govt. was taking way to much power from the states. Of course slavery and the economy of the South was an issue, but not the primary factor in breaking away from the Union. They seceded because they felt the union had changed and was taking all of the power from the states, and did not want to be part of that.

I have my moments when I think that the Republic of Texas should secede again.
