Actually, some believe that Saturday is the day of rest... Some Christians believe that saturday was actually the last day and the day of rest is also Saturday. I don't know if this is true... but... nevertheless, I don't know why it's such a big deal. Who cares if the week is started with Sunday. If you believe that it's the day of rest... then rest on that day. I don't know why you have to come to yahoo answers over it...

Well the sabbath is the day of rest according to the law of Moses. And Jews (like moses) observe saturday as the day of rest. In which case sunday would be at the begining of the week. I can't remember why it changed for this country, but there was a reason!
And, before it we became americanised, we did recite the days of the week begining with sunday. That is how I learnt it at chool.

When the earth was created, Saturday was the sabbath. Saturday was the sabbath until Jesus died on the cross. Jesus died on a Friday (now celebrated as "Good Friday") so that's why you read that they were in a hurry to get the body prepared and into the tomb before dark. Then Jesus rose on Sunday. Because Jesus rose on Sunday, the day that the sabbath is celebrated is on was changed to Sunday. So, when the earth was created, Saturday was the last day, so Sunday must have been the first day, but now in honor of the resurrection we worship on Sunday, and that's why Sunday is the first day and also the sabbath.

The day of rest was the sabbath under Jewish law, which is our Saturday. For whatever reason (I should know this, but shaky memory etc.) the Church long ago changed the day of rest to Sunday, so while the working week starts on Monday, the week itself starts on Sunday. Crazy huh?

Actually the Sabbath day that God decreed on the end of the week is honored on Saturday- ie-the end of the week- by Jews. When Christians broke off from the Jews, they changed their Sabbath day to Sunday.
Oh, and, here in America, when one recites the days of the week, one begins with "Sunday, Monday,.."

In the states we start reciting on "Sunday..."
The reason why is that the Catholic church changed the Sabbath to Sunday a LOOONG time ago, back when the Catholic church used to make radical proclamations to manipulate people's lives, such as buying your way out of hell, having a priest forgive you of sins (when only God can do it), calling the earth flat, saying it's the center of the solar system, etc... The Sabbath, historically, is Saturday. It started as a Jewish holy day, and as Jesus was a Jew, Christians kept with it, though many have forgotten their roots.

I completely 100% agree. I used to work where the weekly rota began from Monday to Sunday and for some ridiculous reason the company changed the financial days going from Sunday to Saturday!
So, the weekly rota - Monday to Sunday and the wages were calculated from Sunday to Saturday! Slightly confusing and completely pointless!
THE START OF THE WEEK IS MONDAY!!!!!!!!

Because... Christianity came from Judaism.. and as you might know, their "resting day" is our Saturday.. which makes Sunday the first day of the week. Why we moved to Sunday... probably because we needed to feel different... but.. still somehow the first day of the week..

Apparently Jesus rose on a Sunday so this is classed as the first day of the week. I went on to www.ask.co and that is what it tells me there. I still class Monday as the first day of the week though. lol :)
