Your doctor goes by the date of your last menstrual period since conception dates are more of an estimate than an accurate and known fact. And so when your doctor says that you are 15 weeks, the first 2 weeks of those 15 is when you were probably getting to ovulate, so you weren't technically pregnant at those first 2 weeks. But like what I said, to make it easier for doctors they have to make a standard rule or guideline when it comes to counting your gestation period or weeks, and it's easier to go by the last menstrual period.

Your weeks of pregnancy are calculated by the date of your last menstrual period (LMP), not by the date of conception. This is a standard used by all practitioners because it is usually a far simpler matter to ask a woman when the first day of her last period was than to determine the exact date of conception. Not all women ovulate at the same point in their cycles. And too, conception is not a "visible" event like a period is, so there is less margin for error. So you basically wind up adding two weeks onto the conception date to get your weeks of pregnancy. The "standard" pregnancy lasts 40 weeks from the beginning of the LMP (or 38 weeks from conception, assuming a regular cycle and ovulation on day 14).

isn't that the most retarded thing in the world?? i asked the same thing myself the other day. I KNOW i was ovulating mid May so that makes me just 8 weeks this week. but the due date is calculated from the first day of your last period. why they add those extra weeks is beyond me. according to that math, that makes me 11 weeks. then you add on the 4.3 weeks that are actually in a month. With this thinking, i'm wondering if pregnancy is not the 40 weeks they say it is. since they insist on adding those 3 extra weeks. and technically in an odd way this makes some sense because on that calculation, it would explain why i am already feeling baby movement this freaking early!! look at it this way...according to the doctor's calculation, i will be delivering a whole 3 weeks earlier!!

They don't go by the date of conception, they go by the date of your last period. Your last period was the beginning of April? If so, you would be 15 weeks this week.

They start counting from your LMP for a "standard" 40 week pregnancy. No, it doesn't make sense, but they all do it.
