First of all you would have to specify what type of games you are trying to open. There are small games which use less graphics and system memory, and there are mammoth games which demand much higher processor power as well as they require the costlier Graphics cards. It does not matter how much RAM you have or what the processor speed is, the games which require Graphics cards will run only with them.

However, you can optimize your PC for a little bit of better performance (you may call it 'tweaking your PC' if you like) by performing a disk-error checking and defragmenting. This also varies with the type of Operating system that you would be using. Here I mention optimizing your system for Windows operating systems. First you will have to close all the programs, including any browser windows that may be open, and then choose Scandisk to first scan your hard drive. You can do this by going to Start menu -> Accessories -> System tools -> Scandisk if you are using Windows 98, and if it is Windows XP, you may simply open My Computer, right-click on the drive, and select Properties -> Tools -> Error Checking. Do this for all the drives of the hard-disk. If you do not know what or how to go about this, I would recommend that you take the help of the administrator of the system.

After you have finished checking for errors, perform a Defragmenting on your hard drive. That option will be available just below Error Checking (for XP), and in System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter for Windows 98. After you have completed both processes, restart your system.

These two processes should optimize your system a little bit, and then try loading the games. If the games contain high graphics content, you may have to get a Graphics card like Nvidia Geforce, or any other option from the vast varieties available in the market. Certain game companies have their own Graphics cards, for instance Eidos have the Glacier engine supported Graphics cards.

If the problem is there only with some games, then that might be caused due to installation mistakes also. Also, you need to have the correct (or latest) DirectX installed on your system, which the game needs. That you can find in the help file available along with the game. The latest version of DirectX available is DirectX 9c.

I hope this answers your question. Happy Gaming!

Well... it depends on the games... honestly, 512 MB of RAM isn't that hot. If you think about it... all RAM is shared between all programs on your computer, so Windows (theoretically) takes some, any anti-virus, etc. Most likely the problem is your RAM.
Good news is that RAM is pretty easy and cheap to upgrade.

upgrade your RAM to at least 1gb or more. This problem may be due to your computer using part of your RAM as shared memory to substitute for a video card
