It's not necessary. A cell phone can NOT prevent kidnapping, a kid breaking his leg, etc. What 5 year old in hysterical tears will think to pick up a cell phone after breaking their leg? None. You think a kidnapper would let a kid keep their belongings and/or make a call? I think not. Personal safety is the key.. cell phones have nothing to do with it.
Getting a GPS dog tag to keep on their wrist or neck might not be such a bad idea. That would at least stay on them if they're kidnapped-- unlike a cell phone in a bag that gets tossed aside.

I dont think they should unless they are the phones that are restricted to calling certain people and places. Kids are growing up so fast now a days. They arent getting the proper monitoring they need from parents and they are becoming adults before their time. When I was a kid there was no such thing as not being monitored on the telephone.

Absolutely. Specifically, you should get your kid the type of cell phone that has GPS capabilities and the ability for the parent to track where their kid is at all times. Not only is this important to make sure your kid isn't places he shouldn't be (NEVER allow your child to spend time unattended outside the home, especially a girl) but it is a great safety tool in the event of a kidnapping. The cops can home in on your kids location in seconds and the average criminal scumbag is waaaay too stupid to know what the cell phone is.

Well my cousin has one, its one of those special ones that only allows the child to contact 4 emergency numbers. My cousin is 11 about to turn 12 and I think its okay. The parents are the only ones who can contact her, not her friends or potenetial boyfriends, I think its a safety procedure, and her parents feel better if she is out with friends.

no because children under 12 cant really defend themselves and dont really have a great sense of responsibility and might easily lose or misplace the phone
