People are more likely to do drugs because marijuana is illegal. If they are going to do something illegal, they might as well do the worst for you since you don't get any more time that if you did pot. If they knew they could just get stoned and not be worried about getting caught, jail term, etc etc they would be less likely to try the harder stuff. Right now, if you do get caught, it really makes no difference if it is crank, crack, ice, or pot, you still get pretty much equal jail terms... so why not just go with the Meth? It is easy to get and cheap..

Why isn't marijuana legal?? One reason - Prescription Drug Manufacturers. They would loose too much in research money and sales. Look on the side of your Tylenol bottle... "May Cause Liver Damage"... Look on other pain relievers... "Allergy Warning"... "Do not use if...." "May cause DEATH"... What is the worst that Mary Jane does?? In rare instances you can be allergic to it, but no more likely than asprin and it doesn't cause reyes syndrome. For the most part, it only makes you hungry, relaxed, and It numbs the pain just like all the others, in many cases better than the others!

Instead of spending $250 a month on potentially lethal pain killers, grandpa could be rolling his own and putting that money toward enjoying his retirement! But no.. we have to make the rich richer and the poor poorer because that is the american way... oh.. and by the way, I have never used marijuana even though I do support that legalization of it. I also support tougher jail terms for the damaging drugs like meth and heroin.

Same reason people drink caffeine, smoke cigarettes, dip chaw, and drink alcohol. All of these are drugs.

Drugs influence your body and mind, and people like those effects. FYI, marijuana is a safer drug (physiologically and psychologically) than alcohol and cigarettes, which are both legal. That is probably one reason why people want it legal, to end the hypocrisy.

The other reason is that the amount of money spent prosecuting and jailing non-violent drug users (whose crimes are completely victimless) is mind boggling. If these drugs were legal, not only would all that money be saved, but these drugs could be taxed to actually generate money for the public and the drugs would be federally regulated to ensure they were safe and not as dangerous as some of the street drugs out there. The money saved and earned could be used for treatment for junkies, and let responsible, casual users live free from fear of prosecution.

People want to do drugs for a variety of reasons. The reasons vary from person to person, and depend a lot on what drugs they choose to do. A heroin addict certainly has drastically different reasons for his/her drug use than someone who experiments occasionally with mushrooms. Some drug users want to experiment with various mind alterants, others want an escape and/or means to relax, still others just want to have a good time.

As for why people want marijuanna to be legal...

There's a big question of whether or not the money we spend on keeping marijuanna illegal is really worth it. First, it's use is ubiquitous; about half of everyone in the US has tried pot, and probably 5-10% of the population uses it regularly. Marijuanna is far less toxic and far less addictive than alcohol, which is legal. Marijuanna users are far less likely to become abusive to their families and loved ones than alcohol. Compare them side to side and it's clear that alcohol is a far more costly drug in its costs to the user and to society, which begs the question, why is pot illegal? And when we consider the most widespread drug problem in America is actually prescription drug abuse (vicodin, valium, and the like) which has far more serious consequences, marijuanna seems like small potatoes. It all begs the question: why do we spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year to prohibit a drug that really isn't much of a problem?

Negatives aside, the marijuanna plant has a number of positive features attached to it. Marijuanna has a number of medical uses, particularly in treating glaucoma and helping chemotherapy patients maintain an appetite and being comfortable in their suffering. Marijuanna is the hemp plant, which has countless uses including making the best quality paper with little environmental damage (wood pulp paper is one of the worst environmental problems out there), making the very best rope, making durable clothes, the seeds are highly nutritious, the oil from the seeds has a variety of potential uses from paint bases to possibly even fueling our automobiles, the fibers from the plant's stalks could make press-board and other building materials, etc. Even better, the plant is easy to grow (it's literally a weed), requiring little water, few fertilizers, very little amounts of pesticide, and is extremely high yeild per acre when compared to plants that currently serve all of hemp's potential purposes. And consider...we can't fuel our driving habit with biodeisel and/or ethanol from corn, but because of it's extremely high yield, it just might be possible with hemp.

It's clear that the drug war hasn't made in dent in pot use, yet the plant's various uses represent a huge financial opportunity for a number of industries. So when you consider that the pot use isn't that aweful of a problem (herion, speed, cocaine, precription drugs are far more tragic problems) and when you consider the huge industrial potential the plant offers, why shouldn't we make it legal?

People want to do drugs because they help people excape reality. Also people do drugs because they get addicted.

Marijuana should be legal because it is no worse than alcohol.

Because many people like doing drugs/ smoking pot., and they don't want to go to jail for it! Also, cannabis is sometimes medically indicated.

I think a big argument for legalizing it is that it has some medicinal value.
