The stick uses usb 2, so I then bought a usb2 card to slot into my lappy, but I still cant get it working, I have installed all the drivers and software, It keeps saying device unknown. Any clues

You neglect to mention what OS you are using!

in addition to the hardware requirement of supporting USB2, your OS must support it as well!

Older OS like 98/me etc. woll not support USB2

Believe it or not, I got a device from Tesco that plugs into a single USB port to create four ports!

you might need winsp1 or sp2
i was asked for sp 1 when i installed mine
you could try
my computer
properties
device manager
select unknown device, then properties search for driver point to driver disc
then driver file.
go to web site they might be able to help
