A football player is as we american's call it..soccer players(I prefer calling it football). The team starts off with 11 players.

a person who plays football. are you being serious here? and what do you mean number of players? there are 23 players on a team and 11 players on the field at one time, not including red card factors.

A football player is an athlete who plays a game known as football (unless you're American then it's called soccer for reasons god doesn't even know) hence the name football player.
The object of this athlete in the game of football mainly is to get the ball in the back of the opponents net.

I'll explain this as simply as I can. A rugby player is a person who plays rugby, a football player is sort of similar except instead of rugby they play football.
