I have these annoying plants in my backyard along the fence and beside the garage. They grow like 12 feet tall and have purple berries on them. My mother-in-law said they are called poke plants. Anyone heard of them? I've cut them down several times and even poured bleach on them. How do I kill them?!

Poke weed, ink berry, pain in the *** plant!! I hate those!! They have these long tap roots that you have to remove completely, otherwise they will resprout and you'll continue to have the problem.

They grow along the fence because birds eat the seeds, they sit on the fence and poop out the seed, where you find the plant growing!

The best thing to do when you see one of these plants is to remove the flowers and berries. This will prevent them from spreading any further, plus it won't give the birds a chance to eat and spread them! Next, get out your shovel and dig out the root. Follow the stem down into the ground to make sure you get the entire root!!

I have tried herbicides, but they don't work. They only kill the top portion of the plant (leaves and stems). It's the root you must get!!!

Good luck to you!

You can buy chemicals from any hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot) to kill the plant. Add liquid soap to the chemical of choice. This will help it to stick and thus be obsorded into the plant to kill the root or you can dig it up but you must get the whole root. I hate those things! They are easier to pull up after a good rain.

Roundup will kill them, just put a little dishsoap in the mix to help the chemical really stick to the plant. We have a ton of those things in our pastures and that's how we kill them.
