I want to start my own house cleaning business, but I am a little hesitate. I already have a good paying job and I am a little scared to fail. I know that if you want something you have to take chances, but I have a family to support. Anyway, do you think it is a good business to start or would you stick with the job that you are so bored at, but bring home a paycheck every week?

I just wanted to tell all of you thank you for the answers, they are all very encouraging.
I plan on putting out fliers and starting on the weekends to see what kind of work I can get.

I would. I have told my fiance that once we can afford it, we are going to have someone come once a week or so to dust, do windows, clean bathrooms... &c.
There is nothing I hate more than cleaning (especially bathrooms!)
It's a great business to start. Lots of people are busy, they have kids, both spouses work, and the last thing they want to do after going to work, and taking the kids to ballet and karate classes, and cooking dinner is scrubbing the grout in the shower.
I think it's a good idea!

Sure, it's a good business. My dad has someone come every two weeks and they did such a good job (better than the others he tried), that he insisted on raising their pay from $65 to $75. He's unusual, but there are so many out there who think they are cleaning when all they do is run the vacuum and do as little dusting as possible. These people (the founder of the business died two years ago after a failed liver transplant and both me and my dad sent flowers--I had her for a time, too) do anything you ask, including window treatments--and windows for an extra price. If you establish yourself better than the rest, you won't be able to keep up with the business you get. I suggest starting on the weekend or something until word of mouth gets around. Good luck!

Honest ? I wouldn't by room, a flat rate is always better ... Give firm *written* instructions, make it business, you don't want this to mess up the sibling deal... Make a weekly chart, rooms and what needs to be done, yes, and remember she is 12.... Praise her for her work each week... I admire her for wanting to earn her own money !!!!!! Just thought I would throw that in... LOL.... Talk to her about the money, make an offer, say 12 $ a week ?? Negotiate just a tad, make her feel a little *grown up * !!! and you will find she will work a LOT happier knowing she did something on her own !!! You could also let her do little errands and out side work or even *baby sit* the little one while you rest.... But, I would certainly keep it on a *business* level...go in peace..... God bless

You bet I would pay the money to have my house cleaned! My husband won't let me have a cleaning lady because he doesn't want a stranger in the house with the dog. There are lots of cleaning ladies around where I live and it seems like lots of people have them. Go for it!

I pay $65 to clean my house. I have 2000 sq.ft 2 level house in San Francisco. For 2 people it takes 2-3 hours to do the job. They do it every 2 weeks. they vacuum, wash floors, clean kitchen and bathrooms.

Well, I wouldn't pay someone to clean my house if i had the money because that shows a sign of weakness and lazyness and trust me you are not going nowhere with that along with you in the world. But i do understand that you have to support your family so go for it!

I would pay to have my house cleaned if I could afford it.

Why don't you start slowly, doing it part-time, until you can get more business? Or try office cleaning, I think there is more of a demand for that.

Absolutely and here's a hint for free: call people between 10a.m. and noon on Saturday because that's when everyone argues about who should clean the house! That's how THE MAIDS got started.

I would love to have someone clean for me but I am leery of letting people come in my home that I do not know. I have lived in apartment buildings where the maintenance people have stolen things. A friend of mine in the same complex had reported that they walked in on the maintenance people rummaging through his wife's underwear drawer.
