Keep it organized afterwards? Everyone just seems to throw things in.I'm kind of scared of what may be lurking in there!

Well, if you live with your family, then I would try labeling the shelves so that people remember which things are supposed to go where.

If you live with some roommates, then I would mark of everyone's own section, and let them deal with their own mess. But make a chore chart of something to ensure that they actually do deal with it.

Well first of all - don't save all of the containers just toss alot in the garbage. You can actually take out the shelving and wash it in the tub. Do the fridge and the freezer separately so your food doesn't spoil. Pick a day when the fridge is more empty than full. Empty one shelf at a time clean the walls and shelf on that level so you can put the good food back before it spoils. Some great ways to keep it organized afterwards, especially with frozen goods is to get a permanent marker and date your items so you know how old they are. That way if you know something is so old that it is moldy and sickening - don't even bother to open it to find out! If you have more glass containers, you can get tape or refigerator stickers in a hardware store like home depot that will stick and come off easily that you can mark the dates on. It helps to have an assistant who can help you do the job faster. You probably have a neighbor or friends children or teen who would love to get 5 bucks or whatever to help you out. So many young people are going on missions trips - donate to their cause for helping you out!

Put a big pot on the stove and open the trash bin. stand in front of the fridge and start throwing! Good stuff in the pot, bad stuff in the trash. You will not only clean out the fridge but supper will almost be ready when you are done. Give the stew a fancy name.
If you think there will be a lot make sure that all the family is there, and you might invite guests.

LOL I have the same problem cleaning my fridge. Here's what I've started doing -

Every time I do major grocery shopping, I'll grab a chair, sit down in front of the fridge, and pull just about everything out. I'll put the things back in the correct spot that I need to keep, and everything that's too old to recognize (or even if I recognize it as something I had a *month* ago) I'll throw out. If you do it every couple of weeks, it doesn't take that long and it prevents clutter and nastiness buildup.

Easy if it looks like a science project out it goes. If my husband asks what was this? Out! If you can burp and still taste it, it's safe! Anything that is not the same color as when you ate it trash! If there is less than 1 inch in a jar out! To keep it clean if it falls out when you open the door toss it. Tell the kids there is a missing $10 in the back, you think.

Get containers at the Container store and use an erasable marker on them to what is in the container, and the date. That way you know when to throw it out. I cleaned my fridge yesterday, found some pretty yucky stuff, lol.

Wear gloves and goggles! My mom cleans tupperwares out, but if I have to ask myself whether or not I should open it, I toss it out--plain and simple. From now on, if I were you, I'd just clean it out every week, so nothing gets built up or rotten in there. Yeach...

Take everything out, check dates. Anything that is old or doesn't have a date should go! Then take a rag or something and clean every shelf.
