Pornography is probably not The Cure's best overall album in terms of songwriting or production(that distinction most likely goes to either The Head On The Door or Disintegration), but in terms of it's accurate portrait of the bleak honesty of Robert Smith's tortured spirit, it's their masterpiece. Smith was a heavy cocaine user during this period and the tension in the band was heavy. As well, his relationships were collapsing all around him due to the above drug usage as well as the pressures of promoting, recording, and wriiting new material. As such, the content on this album deals with boredom, pain, misery, routine, unreciprocated love, and substance addiction. It is a powerful statement from both an artistic standpoint as well as a document of the stoic fragility of the human will. Listen on headphones for maximum effect. A personal favourite record of mine. Standout tracks include The Hanging Gardens and Cold.

Wow these are some sad answers.

I really can't go with anything but Disintegration. It's, in my opinion, the best album ever made. Pornography is close behind, though.

I've actually been listening to Join the Dots in my car today. Even the Cure's b-sides are far and away better than anything out there today.
