Cross country is much more of a mental sport than many people think. You run not so much for a good time, but to beat other runners.
Once you get your basics down, you can figure out what kind of strategy works for you. Some people like to go out at a fast pace and stay in front the whole time. Some like to hang behind the leaders and try to out sprint them at the finish. Some teams even use strategies like sending out very fast runners early (called rabbits) to try to burn out people who may try to keep up. Or assign people to tail specific runners on another team and mess with their pace.
Anyway, a good coach can help with the basics. If you havent run much before, try running 3 times a week for 30 minutes, and one longer run of 4-5 miles. Your short runs should work on speed and stride, your longer run on endurance. For a long run, if you can talk while you run, you're going fast enough. If you cant talk, slow down. For short runs, try things like sprints, where you run one lap hard and one at a jog, and repeat. Or take a hill on a road, run up then jog down, and repeat.

If you're out of shape at all, the first several weeks will be about stretching out before and after you run. It's easy to over-do it in the beginning and get injured or suffer aches/pains. After a few weeks (with a sensible diet) your body should be in good enough shape to consider lengthening your distance, etc. Most of cross-country is mental. You have to win that argument in your head, "Can I keep going?"...You can!

The more that you race the more that you will learn. You will learn what works best for you!!! Train hard but train sensibly. You don't want to over do it and burn out. Learn about your body - and know your limits and you will be able to attain success. Everybody is different so that is why it is so important that you listen and learn from your body. pump your arms hard and when you are unbelievebly tired, look at the sky. Check it out... the faster you pump your arms the faster your legs go. Always breath at a steady pace don't breath like you are dying even if you feel it.
I'm oonly 11 but I just joined also.

find someone expiranced, run with them, watch them, go to xc meets and watch them, and before you know it, you will know a lot of things.
