My husband and I decided long before we got pregnant, that a boy would be named "Gerald" which I chose. And a girl "Barbara" which husband chose. Then we had a girl and her name is "Barbara" chosen by her biological father and she looks like him! I would say so.

I've never heard of any signifigance of a father naming the child. I think any father who does insist on naming the child definitely has an ego problem, because 90% fathers want to name them after themselves, jr., 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.
I don't agree with that. Why are you so hung up with yourself that you have to name your kid after you, so that he ends up being called Bub, Jr., JR, or their first and second initials, CJ. I think every child deserves their own identity, not have to be stuck with yours.
What if you end up worthless, your child doesn't have a chance. What if your child ends up worthless, you'll always be associated with it also and they'll get your names mixed up on who was really the child molester.
Anyway, as a woman, I would welcome input on names and hope we both agreed on something. But, no man would ever tell me what my childs name would be after I carried it for 9 months, without me agreeing.
Kind of got off the subject, but the only signifigance I can see in a father naming a child is to show that he is in total control!

This may not answer your question totally , but as far as I'm concerned , the father already gives his last name to the child and the rest should be left up to the mother.I personally never understood why children have to bare thiere fathers last name instead of the mom's.Just an other proof that this truly is a man's world.

Old Native American legend is that when a child is born, the father walks out into the forest and names the child after the first thing he sees.

I do not believe that a male or female naming the child with change the meaning, but I think that it also depends on the origin of the name.

mothers have always decided the child's name where I come from, the father might get to suggest names, and they do not get to name the mother because she usually already has a name.

In many cultures the father naming the child signifies his acceptance of the child as his own. It shows that he trusts his wife hasn't slept around and that the child is indeed his.
