Check the cables and make sure both ends are sucurely attached. Believe it or not but most cabled connection problems stem from the simplies things. Now, if that does not work you need to check the configuration of the NIC card. Make sure the security key is entered correctly. All the nodes (stations) have to be configured exactly the same or there can be no connectivity. Also check the DHCP is giving an address for the NIC card, I know it has one for the wireless configuration but it also needs one for the wired connection. I know it should be the same one but when you change from one configuration to another (wired vrs. wireless) you need to make sure DHCP is working correctly. Is the Zero config service working? Open up your services and make sure it is running and if not start it. Do you still have the check box "let windows configure my connection checked?
If you are using windows to configure your conections you can click on "repair" when you right click on the computer icon in the system try. Sometimes just clicking repair fixes connectivity problems. Do you have the NIC card connected to the correct port? It needs to be connected to a LAN Port, not the WAN port. Your IP Adress needs to be in the same range as your router too. Check what IP address range the laptop currently has. If it is not in the same range you will need to manually configure the address. You can tell what your IP address is by opening a command prompt either via RUN or ACCESSORIES-Command Prompt.
If you use RUN, click Start-Run, then type ipconfig if XP or winipcfg for OSs older than XP. Then at the curser type in: ipconfig/all and your IP address will be listed. Find your routers default IP address and see if it starts with a 192, if it does and your computer IP address also starts with 192 you are OK. If your computer IP begins with somehting else like 169 and your router is 192 then they are not in the same range and you will not be able to connect to the internet.
I suggest a book called "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking" by Mark Edward Soper, which you can pick up at the local book store. It is extreamly detailed with ample amounts of information but easy to read, understand and follow the directions. It contains everything a person could need to get a solid grip on home networking both wired and wireless with a bit of home PNA and bridging. It also has adding other nodes to your network like game consoles and TiVo etc. I have found it a great book for beginners and even intermediate users.
Good luck figuring out what is wrong and getting it fixed. Buy the book even if you get it fixed easily this time. It is a good one! A great referance tool.
These are some of the main trouble shooting techniques you can go through and work on to see if one fixes the problem. If you continue to have a problem you may need to call either your ISP, computer manufacturer, or the router technical assistance. I would start with the routers technical assistance.

When you want to use your ethernet cable and not your wireless you need to change the computer to recognize this...
Go to Network Settings or Connect to (from the Start menu of your PC)
Disable your wireless network connection
Enable your ethernet connection
You may need to restart the computer...
Good Luck

You will have to "add a connection" in your network settings. Control Panel > Network connections.
