Well, I have done it as part of an organization. I work with a non profit organization and our projects are all funded by several federal and state grants. Is it tough, without guidance it can be. You really need to know the subject that you are writing about or do very good research. I have written grants on the side for fire departments that I work with as a volunteer, but again this is a subject that i am passionae about so it makes it easier. What exactly are you looking at doing? Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

It's not that tough! Find a grad student or prof who has written some, and ask to see their work. Then develope a "boiler plate" proposal, incorporating the specifics into the document!
