I do a few things....
1.) Assume the opposite of everything said is the truth.. (i.e. naming the PATRIOT act)
2.) Look into international media..
3.) Ask myself.... "Who benefits?" from a situation.

Very good question. I believe that the Zionist lobby in the US controls the media for the purpose of meeting the Zionist political agenda.
As for the “conspiracy theories” I can only say that if the official 9/11 story had convinced the people, these “conspiracy theories” would not have found their way.
We are lucky that we have the opportunity to investigate the local news “fed” to us by our governments by searching, investigating and analyzing ourselves through the tremendous information provided on the internet. We just have to ensure the validity of the information we are reading.
The “conspiracy theories” do provide answers to many “unanswered questions and their answers do make much sense.
I have numerous such sources that provide shocking information as well as answers that make sense of what is happening today and what happened on and since the tragic 9/11.
What brought the twin towers down, Israeli involvement in 9/11, the alleged 9/11 hijackers that flew the planes into the towers and are alive, the Israeli spy scandals on US soil, Israeli covert operations against the US (The Lavon affair, the USS Liberty ) to set up Arab countries so that the US may go into war against them – so much.
This one covers an interview with the “real” Bin Laden with a Pakistani newspaper on Sept. 28, 2001 in which Osama denies any involvement in the 9/11 attacks contrary to the tapes released by the US. http://www.911review.com/articles/usamah...
I have previously mentioned in some of my answers about my curiousity concerning how many US citizens had ever heard of Osama Bin Laden, El Qua’da, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saddam, Iran, and Syria etc.. before 9/11 – how many of them knew or know now where these countries are on the world map? All of sudden “everyone knows” everything about these” blood thirsty terrorists” who were never mentioned before as a threat to the national security of the US.
Finally wouldn’t people be more safe knowing the truth of who are the real terrorists and make them pay dearly for their heinous crime on 9/11 or do they just a scapegoat because they cannot handle the truth?

i agree with Travis_b7, besides that the media sells more papers by reporting things that incite hate or sadness, that's not to say all stories are false or full of lies you just need to be careful of what you read. and really, if the government told it's citizens everything how would we keep national secretes out of every countries hands? i don't think their so bad that everything is a conspiracy theory though

We really don't get much info. If we knew EVERYTHING the government was doing, we'd freak out. And if the media told us everything the military was doing, it would put so many of our men and women in uniform in danger.. more than you can imagine. So we are told what the government lets us hear.
Oh, and media can SO be influenced by politics... some newspapers are more liberal, some more conservative. Both sides have their extremes.

Currently the press is very unfiltered in their reporting of the news.
What I mean by unfiltered is that when a person (politician, civilian, etc.) says a blatant lie, the interviewer is unwilling to question it (unless you are on Faux News and are a liberal, then when you tell the truth or lie it is questioned until you just give up).

One thing I've realised is that you Americans cant trust *anything* your government tells you. The FBI/CIA has the power to bend laws, tell lies, assassinate people, hide the facts etc. Why should you trust them. Just think, if the CIA has been bought by corrupted officials...
Check this out, a report on how the CIA used planes with company logos to transport "suspects".
