In the Civil War, American southerners were the rebels, breaking away from the United States. The South believed it was fighting for its freedom, the North believed it was fighting for the freedom of all and the preservation of the nation.

In the various wars against American Indians, the Indians were defending their land and the whites were killing the "savages" to make the land safe for other whites.
