an amp is the power source for the speaker but in the guitar world when you refer to an amp your talking about the entire cabinate when they are in the same box. If you buy seperates then you need to get an amp and a speaker cabinate a monitor is when you have a large system and you need a speaker right by you to hear your instrument which can also be your (amp) PA is the larger system wher you have your main speakers connected to a mixer either powered (with a built in amp) or passive (external amps)

Well, technically they're more or less the same thing. Both Amplify a sound signal coming through an input. A guitar amp may offer more ability to control the sound (base / treble control, gain, etc...) although in a concert setting, the mix going out to the PAs could be equalized at the board.

guitar amp = plug into wall and plug guitar into amp
PA system has main speakers and monitor speakers
These speakers are connected to a mixer.
The mixer has mics coming from the amps and drums and singer.
The difference btw main and monitor speakers:
Main Speakers = usually bigger than monitors and point out to crowd.
Monitor Speakers = face the band so that they can hear themselves together.

Amp drives the music into the speakers.
Monitors are what controls the loudness, treble, bass, ect that will then be driven by the amps into the speakers.

Speakers are used to make a sound louder at a given distance from any sound the microphone unit picks up. Amplifiers broaden AND louden a specified sound from a pick-up unit.
