AVI files normally play just fine in Windows media player. Probably the problem is that you do not have the proper codecs to decode the video and audio streams.

The most common avi codecs are:

Xvid: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/
DivX: http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/

Occassionally you will need the AC3 audio codec for Dobly surround sound:

AC3: http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

Hope this helps! Good luck.

You can right click on the avi file and use the OPEN WITH option to open with the application of your choice. Thats the easy way.

Or you can just open up the WMP program and then OPEN the avi file with it.

Or go to ANY folder. Go to TOOLS then FOLDER OPTIONS and then under the FILE TYPES tab, you can set avi files to open with WMP all the time without asking.
