First try pressing crtl, alt, delete at the same time, a pop up box should appear with options to close the problem program, at this point close all programs and shut down the computer with the button shut down. If this does not work, try pressing crtl, alt, delete at the same time but do it twice this will automatically shut down the computer. If this does not work press the reset but, it that does not work push the power button your computer will then reboot itself and scan disk will appear to fix shutting down your computer the wrong way. PS before I shut down my computer I log off first just to close all my programs its. You should get your system checked out.

There is something that is hanging on your system. Usually a program that won't unload. Need more information in order to assist you. Where does it hang, windows screen, shutdown screen etc., and what Operating System are you using. Also has it always done this, or did it just start suddenly.

Additional Info: I see many posts here advocating a hard shutdown (unplugging the power, holding the power button in, flipping the power switch etc.). Although this will shut your system down it is not recommended. The fact that system will not shutdown properly indicates a problem. Hard shutdowns can be used if absolutely necessary, but should only be a last resort as they can cause data loss, or possibly a corruption of your operating system in extreme instances.

There is probably some program that won't shut down and therefor stalls the shutdown process. Spyware tends to do this. Try just holding in the power button on your tower until it shuts down. Thats the hard shut down way. Also try running adaware or something like that.

is this a continuous problem?

use the on/off switch...

if that fails.. turn off the power strip that it is plugged into...

if this is a continuous problem.. you need to have your neighborhood geek look at it... be prepared to buy him a pizza and coke.
