HI, for 19 out of 20 years my parents were married, only my father worked. However, this past year my mother at age 40+ started working for an insurance comp. who trained her. The reason why in many families both parent are working now is because we became accustomed to luxuries and the only way to have them is if both parents work. Another reason may be, working gives a person something to do and helps them feel accomplished.

It's hard to say I grew up up in a home where my mother worked everyday until she got laid off, then it was whenever she could. My father worked on and off. Now that I am grown and have a family both my husband and I work.
