Expecting the best in this best of all possible worlds; "in an optimistic mood"; "optimistic plans"; "took an optimistic view"
affirmative: expecting the best; "an affirmative outlook"
Optimism, the opposite of pessimism, is a lifeview where one looks upon the world as a positive place. Optimists generally believe that people are inherently good. They have a "positive" outlook on life, believing that given time, things will work out in the end.

Optimistic is defined as looking over the bright side of things and being pretty confident about it. For example, if you're still happy that a waiter serves you a quarter full of water instead of a full glass, that's being optimistic.

In other words, no matter how bad things get, if you're happy and confident that things will turn out ok, that's what optimism is.

Pessimism or being pessimistic is the opposite of optimism. Instead of looking things brightly, you look things in a negative aspect. No matter what happens, you still think everything will result in a bad thing.

Realism or being realistic is what is between optimism and pessimism. Going back to the example of the glass of water, if you're ok with it, but are neither happy nor glum of the matter, that's being realistic.

An optimist looks at the good side of things. A pessimist is the opposite and looks at the bad side of things. Say for instance you total your car. A pessimist would say, that's awful now you have to buy a new car. An optimist would say, cool now you can get that new car you've been wanting. Hope this helps.
