and i had a feeling i should answer so i did and we talked for a long time and she has had a very bad summer i still want to be her friend but not her best friend or anything i just think we needed some time apart do you think i am making the right decision?

no, once controlling will always be controlling. They will be controlling you and not even realize that they are doing it. My friend of 18 yrs is very controlling and verbally abusive and my only solution for my problem is to ignore her as much as you can. Just talk on the phone instead of face to face. It is okay to get together once in a while but set you time limit so that you can handle being around her from time to time. Warning! Do not let her buy you things. She will hold it over your head meaning she'll used it against you someway.
