Whilst it is understandable that some people feel awkward and embarassed about disabled people, as disabled people have historically been placed in institutions and kept segregated such that non-disabled people do not know many disabled people and therefore do not understand disabled people particularly well, all that is changing as special schools are closed and inclusive education practised instead.
You need to learn to see the person not the disability, Hawking is a genius and arguably the greatest living scientist. Being deaf did not stop Beethoven writing his magnificent 9th (Choral) Symphony. And motor neurone disease has not stopped stopped Hawking making important contributions to physics and cosmology.
Unfortunately there is a mistaken belief that if someone has a physical impairment, it follows that they must be mentally impaired, too. Hawking's achievements demonstrate the folly of that assumption and refute it.

Dr. Hawking suffers from Motoneuron disease.Motor Neuron Disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which motoneurons in the spinal cord and brain progressively die, resulting in muscle paralysis . There is currently no cure or treatment for this disease and so the development of an effective therapy remains an imperative.

I'm not him, but I know the answer.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, Maladie de Charcot or motor neurone disease) is a progressive, almost invariably fatal neurological disease.
